겨울 전쟁(핀란드어: talvisota 탈비소타[*], 스웨덴어: vinterkriget 빈테르크리게트[*], 러시아어: Советско-финская война)은 제2차 세계 대전이 진행 중이던 1939년 11월 30일 소련이 핀란드를 침공하여 발발한 전쟁으로 소련-핀란드 전쟁이라고도 한다. 일명 '계속 전쟁'인 제2차 소련-핀란드 전쟁과 대비하여 제1차 소련-핀란드 전쟁이라고도 한다. 이오시프 스탈린은 1939년 말까지 핀란드 전체를 수복할 것이라 생각했지만, 핀란드는 1940년 3월까지 버텼으며 이때 양자는 모스크바 평화 조약을 맺고, 소비에트 연방에 카렐리야 동부 지역(핀란드 영토의 10%, 산업 능력의 20%에 해당)을 넘겨주었으며, 소비에트 연방은 이 땅과 카렐리야 소비에트 사회주의 자치 공화국을 합쳐 카렐리야-핀란드 소비에트 사회주의 공화국을 세웠다. 결국 핀란드는 이웃한 발트 3국과는 달리 소련에 다시 흡수되는 운명은 면했다.

살라 전투
살라 전투(핀란드어: Sallan taistelut)는 겨울전쟁 당시 랩란드 살라 근교에서 핀란드군과 소련군이 맞붙은 전투이다. 소련군은 살라를 거쳐 케미얘르비와 소단퀼래로 진격하려 했다. 소단퀼래에 닿으면 로바니에미까지는 불과 2주 거리였다. 그리고 로바니에미에서 토르니오로 진격하면 핀란드 병력을 둘로 나눌 수 있었다. 그러나 핀란드군은 케미얘르비 동쪽에서 소련군의 진격을 막아내는 데 성공했다. 1940년 2월 마지막 주에는 핀란드군 병력은 거의 빠지고 스웨덴-노르웨이-덴마크계 의용군들로 이루어진 스웨덴 의용전투단이 소련군을 상대했다.

The Battle of Taipale was a series of battles fought during the Winter War between Finland and Soviet Union from 6 to 27 December 1939. The battles were part of a Soviet campaign to penetrate the Finnish Mannerheim Line in the Karelian Isthmus region to open a route into southern Finland. Despite their numerical superiority, the Soviet forces were unable to break through the Finnish defences.
