History Map World user guide
History Map World shows what happened around the world and where the borders were, on one map, as you move through the years with the slider at the bottom.
Moving through time
Drag the slider handle to change the year; the ◀ ▶ buttons on either side move one step at a time. AD years move in 10-year steps by default, and you can choose 5, 10, 30, 50 or 100 years under 'Year step' in Settings (⚙). BC years move by century.
The colored strips above the slider are war maps and theme maps available for that time. Tap a strip to open that map. Tap an era name below the slider to jump to the start of that era.
Using the map
Drag the map to turn it sideways, and zoom with two fingers or the mouse wheel. Double-tap to zoom in one step. Tap a country to highlight it and show its name. Country names can be hidden in Settings.
Dots on the map are events of that time. Tap a dot to open the event list at that event.
Event list and event pages
On a phone, pull the list up from the bottom; on a computer, use the list on the right. You can filter by category (war, politics, science and more). Descriptions are the first paragraph of Wikipedia, with a link to the original.
Expand an event and tap 'Open event page' to see its page. Event pages also show earlier and later events nearby, who ruled that land over time, and other maps of the same period.
Other maps
Tap the map icon at the bottom left to switch to war maps and theme maps such as plagues, inventions and religions. War maps show each side's territory and battles month by month or year by year. On any map, expand a card and tap 'Open details page' to see the page for that item or war.
Settings
In Settings (⚙) you can change the language, dark mode, hiding country names and the year step, share the current view, or contact the developer. Shared links include the year you are viewing.
