In 1867 Joseph Lister, a surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, published his method of antiseptic surgery. Building on Louis Pasteur's germ theory, he used carbolic acid (phenol) to clean wounds, dressings and surgical instruments, and deaths from infection after operations fell sharply. Antiseptic and later aseptic technique became standard practice in surgery.
